Trauma Informed Practice in Fostering

Aims

  • To consider trauma, its definition and specific profiles.
  • To reflect on the importance of attachment and attachment style through the lens of the Secure Base model of care.
  • Be able to identify important physical, emotional and mental impacts  for those who have experiences trauma, and how these forms of communication can be viewed negatively
  • Reflect upon how physiological and psychological adaptation occurs in an attempt to cope with difficult feelings.
  • Discuss theories to support children to learn new strategies, to be able to respond and better understand their own journey towards a place of resilience.
  • Consider implications for children and young people who become “stuck” and unable to adapt.

Overview

Trauma informed Practice is a corner stone in a foster carers skill set, The principles of  this approach allow us to learn to understand the child and their behaviours as methods of communication. By allowing children and young people to go backwards, to make sense of their journey with the support of trauma informed practitioners. We can support them to move forward and to move from coping and struggles to a place of resilience. A must for all foster carers!.
